Abstract

Glucocorticoids are widely used in the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Their therapeutic use is associated with osteoporosis, with resultant fractures. Glucocorticoids lead to decreased bone formation and increased bone resorption. Dose and duration of glucocorticoid use have a significant impact on fracture risk. Other risk factors for Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) include age, route of administration and underlying disease. GIOP for prevention of osteoporotic fracture should be evaluated and treated properly. In this article we review the pathophysiology of Glucocorticoid action on bone metabolism, epidemiology, lifestyle modifications and effective treatments that can reduce fracture risk in the menopausal women and men over 50 years old.
